How do I know when I need to get help to care for a loved one?
It takes a village. Truly. The moment it is realized the care needs are more than one person can manage without having significant change in lifestyle and quality of life then it is time to get help. It is a personal decision and not a one size fits all. Receiving care at home is a choice not a medical mandate. Do not decide when help is needed by hearing from a medical provider but seek help the moment there is a need. It takes a community to do it well and building that community sooner versus later keeps everyone healthier.
What care option do I choose: home care, nursing home, assisted living, day care or family only?
How you create your village/community around a loved one’s care need is a very personal matter and not a medical provider opinion matter. The best way to determine what option of care to choose is by understanding the nuances of each option such as type of care need accepted by the option provider, cost, and the likelihood of having to move on to another setting quickly if the option only handles a certain level of care. Advice on this topic is best given from a professional navigator versus the care organization itself. Not all assisted livings have the same care level rules. Not all care facilities operate with the same acuity level for particular care needs. Care giving companies cannot perform nursing functions. Not all family members are equipped to manage lifting or turning. Talk it over with an expert but always know the choice belongs to the family/POA.
How much does in-home care cost?
The average cost of in-home care in central Indiana is $25/hour. Licensed companies may require more per hour for short shifts (under four hours), location and for adding on needs of another person in the home or for a pet.
